Buying a used car is not always something people look forward to. Used car salesmen have developed a reputation of being sleazy and dishonest. On the other hand, buying from a private seller is not automatically the best option. By entering the car buying process with the right knowledge, you will be able to find a good deal on a good car.
One thing that is almost certainly a given is that buying from a private seller is going to be cheaper. It is more complicated for dealers to sell cars than your average private seller, Joe. Say Joe is sick of his car and he wants to sell it. There are numerous ways Joe could go about this. He could put a handmade sign in the window. He could tell his friends and relatives that he was selling his car. He could post a classified ad on the Internet or in the newspaper. Using these methods, Joe is the only person involved in the process. And he’s doing it cheaply. When a dealership wants to sell cars, first it has to find them, then buy them, and then pay its employees to sell them. Joe can cover these steps by himself and save money.
Dealerships have an advantage over private sellers in a couple of different areas. There are laws that prevent dealers from selling broken cars. These laws don’t apply to private sellers. Also, when purchasing from a dealer, they will be able to help you with the financing. Dealerships may also offer some type of warranty for the vehicle.
Buying a used car takes time. It is not wise just to run out and buy the first one you see. When buying from a private seller, make sure to get the car inspected by a mechanic. When buying from a dealer, make sure you’re not paying more than the car is worth. If you have patience when looking for a used car, you will be much happier in the end.
