Do you like to go out to eat? Do you buy a Grande White Chocolate Mocha to start each day off? Do you drive a short distance to work rather than walking or riding a bike? If so, you’re spending thousands each year that you don’t need to spend! Some people think of living frugally as a bad thing, but the reality is that you can still live well on a budget.
When deciding to live on a budget, entertainment costs are the easiest thing to cut down on. Did you know that there are plenty of entertainment options that don’t cost a penny? Look in your local newspaper or online for free events near you. There should be a great deal of them. Go to a nearby museum for fun. Take a stroll in a park or go for a bike ride. Instead of going to a theater, watch a movie at home.
Save money on gas by searching for the cheapest prices online. Cut back on driving. Walk or ride a bike for short trips. In addition to saving money, you will feel good about getting into better shape.
Limit yourself to dining out only once a week. Pack a lunch for work.
Shop around for the best price on things. Many necessities such as toothpaste can be found for cheap at dollar stores. Don’t spend $4 on toothpaste at a big box store when the 99¢ store down the street sells the same thing for $1. If you have a debit card, only use your bank’s ATMs to withdraw money. Other ATMs can charge you up to $8 just to access your own money!
Finally, skip Starbucks! Over the course of a month, some people spend over $100 on coffee! If you must have coffee, make it at home.
If you’re not used to living on a budget, it’s going to take some time getting the hang of it. Just remember when you’re purchasing something – do I really need this? If so, can I find it somewhere else for cheaper?
