Vision problems can affect anyone at any age, so taking care of your vision is important whether you are young or old. Comprehensive eye exams should be performed every year, or at the very least every two years, to make sure that your eyes are working as they should. Just because you think you may not need glasses doesn’t mean there isn’t something wrong with your sight or that you may not actually need them. People often think their eyes are working fine, but suffer from headaches and migraines due to poor vision health.

Comprehensive eye exams include a number of different vision tests. One is the visual acuity test, which test the sharpness and clarity of your vision. It’s the commonly performed test where you’re asked to read letters that decrease in size from 20 feet away.

Another common test is the confrontation visual field test, which tests your central and peripheral vision. This consists of your optometrist sitting in front of you as you cover one eye. The doctor will then slowly enter your field of vision and you let them know when you see them enter your line of sight.

Finally, there are pupillary tests, which test your pupillary reactions, or how your pupils dilate and constrict in response to light. Your pupil reactions are tested when bright lights are shined in one or both of your eyes. Certain pupillary reactions can reveal neurological problems, including some serious conditions.

So don’t put off getting your eyes tested. The health of your eyes and vision can say a lot about the health of the rest of your body, so be sure to treat them with the care and the attention they need!
